Devizes Churches Together Environment Group
Following two visioning days in 2015 and 2016, five of our local churches agreed to join a group to pursue the Eco Church challenge. This is an on-line survey of activities to reduce the environmental impact of the church and to promote wider understanding of the need to protect our environment, particularly with regard to climate change. There are three award levels, bronze, silver and gold. The first two are self-assessed and for the gold level, assessors visit to see and discuss the achievements. The scheme has five areas of activity covering the whole life of the church:
Worship and teaching
Community and Global Engagement
Stewardship of the environment is a major responsibility for Christians and using this format we can support and encourage each other and join forces with other local organisations to minimise the carbon footprint of Devizes. The group meets several times a year to discuss progress. The most important aspect, and maybe the most difficult, is to take the whole congregation along. One or two people can take a lead, but this needs to be a whole church action for any lasting success. Working as a group can help us to broaden our thinking and find ways to reduce our impact imaginatively.
