Good Friday 2019
A Special Service
Members of Rock Community Church and St. James Church took the lead in this year's Market Place service and the Churches Together Music Group led the singing. It was sobering to reflect on how we would respond if we were on the receiving end of the treatment Jesus received? We were also encouraged to consider what Jesus was inviting us to hand over to him. What burden(s) were we carrying that we should bring to the cross? It was a special moment when we each wrote something on small luggage labels and tied them to the red ribbons that hung from the cross.
It was a perfect day for the walk to Roundway Hill with the three crosses . With all ages taking part, there were lots of people ready to take a turn at carrying the crosses. Three meditative stops on the way gave us food for thought. A couple from Southampton had made their annual trip that day to join us. A picnic together near the entrance to Roundway nature reserve was followed by the final few hundred yards to Olivers Camp, where the crosses were erected on the ledge half way down the steep slope. The prayerful quietness that followed was a fitting conclusion to a meaningful time of worship.
